It was fantastic! Sure, I scuffled like a wild beast with my brothers from time to time, and my mother was swift as a demon whenever she caught us misbehaving, but it was as good a childhood as anyone could ask for. Yes, we had to work from a young age around the orchard, and yes we had to make do with a lot of second hand and home-made belongings, but frankly I’d rather that any day over some of the pampered lives I’ve seen rich young kids live. How can you learn to appreciate anything if you’ve never had to work to make it or never wanted for without it?

I’d gotten up in the night to get some water from the pump outside the kitchen and found my father sitting in the kitchen, crying- maybe it was the sound of him that actually woke me. When you’re a little girl, your father is your world. I remember I felt like the floor had dropped out from under me, which is why the memory probably stuck.

His mother had been ill for a while, I found out later, but he’d been putting off visiting her until after the worst of the winter storms passed through. Poor old girl, she died from a chill and he never found out until after the funeral because there was such bad flooding between here and Gallsbury that the message couldn’t get through.

Of course when I got older I realised just how sappy my old could be. He had a big heart, that man, and that wasn’t the last time I saw him break down over someone he loved.

Yes, but not for the learning! I lie, I lie, the learning wasn’t too bad, I was a pretty smart girl, but I used to get fidgety having to sit so long without being able to do anything with my hands apart from write. I got switched more than once for whittling my desk with my pen knife!

What I loved was getting out of the farm and into a big group of kids my age. I’m a people person, always have been, always will be, and I scampered to school early every day to go play with them.

Though when puberty hit me like a sack of bricks I spent more time trying to find ways to sneak out with my friends then I did trying to learn. Boy, did my grades drop then.

Before adolescence hit, whittling and climbing trees with my brothers. After adolescence hit, I preferred playing with other people my age, if you catch my drift~
