What is your earliest memory?

I’d gotten up in the night to get some water from the pump outside the kitchen and found my father sitting in the kitchen, crying- maybe it was the sound of him that actually woke me. When you’re a little girl, your father is your world. I remember I felt like the floor had dropped out from under me, which is why the memory probably stuck.

His mother had been ill for a while, I found out later, but he’d been putting off visiting her until after the worst of the winter storms passed through. Poor old girl, she died from a chill and he never found out until after the funeral because there was such bad flooding between here and Gallsbury that the message couldn’t get through.

Of course when I got older I realised just how sappy my old could be. He had a big heart, that man, and that wasn’t the last time I saw him break down over someone he loved.
